Anton Perich

Anton was born near Dubrovnik, Croatia. From 1965 to 1970 he lived in Paris, where he was active for several years with the Lettrist Group, as a painter, poet and filmmaker. From 1967 to 1969 he created and ran an international underground film program at American Center on Boulevard Raspail in Paris. Included in the program were films by Heliczer, Iimura, Mekas, Warhol, Lemaitre, Bassan, Auder.

Anton then moved to New York in 1970. In the early Seventies he was a contributing photographer for Andy Warhol's INTERVIEW Magazine. A selection of photographs are featured in the collection of the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Warhol Foundation, and the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York.

Anton’s first exhibition was in January 1972, at the Gotham Book Mart Gallery in New York. His photographs are published in many periodicals and books, and shown in galleries worldwide including a more recent exhibition “The Outsiders: New York Underground 60’s, 70’s, 80s” shown in October 2005 at Galerie du Jour Agnes B. in Paris France.

In 1973 he produced and directed a television program for Manhattan Cable TV. The show was controversial because it introduced characters and materials that were challenging and foreign to the television content of the day. It was the first Underground show on American television, and it was censored during the broadcast, causing a serious scandal and radical changes in the cable TV. Anton was an early pioneer of the video art and cable television.

In 1972 Anton’s video tapes were shown at the Kitchen. In 1975 German Television presented 1 hour Anton Perich Show on West 3 channel. Segments of his video works are often shown on network and cable television in the USA, Europe and Japan.

In 1977-78 Anton engineered and built an electric painting machine (an early predecessor of the ink jet printer/scanner) and in 1979 he had his first show of electric paintings at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. Anton was an early pioneer of electric/digital/computer art.

In 1978 Anton started publishing NIGHT Magazine. NIGHT is still published intermittently and features painting, photography, poetry, fiction, essays, and interviews. Anton was an early pioneer of the underground magazine publishing.

Currently, Anton continues to paint, photograph, and create video, for his production of a half hour weekly cable TV show and he also continues to publish Night Magazine.
